Numerology alphabet chart: Pythagorean letter values A-Z

A numerology alphabet chart assigns a value from 1 to 9 to each letter. In the Pythagorean system, the sequence repeats through A-Z. The values can then be added in different combinations to calculate the name-based numbers in a chart.

Pythagorean numerology letter chart

1

A, J, S

The sequence begins with A and repeats every nine letters.

2

B, K, T

Use 2 whenever one of these letters appears in the name being calculated.

3

C, L, U

All occurrences count; repeated letters are not removed.

4

D, M, V

Spaces, hyphens and punctuation have no numerical value.

5

E, N, W

Accents are normally converted to the nearest A-Z letter before calculation.

6

F, O, X

The same table is used for Expression, Soul Urge and Personality calculations.

7

G, P, Y

Y requires a stated vowel rule when calculating Soul Urge and Personality.

8

H, Q, Z

Pythagorean numerology gives Z the value 8 rather than 9.

9

I, R

The alphabet ends before a third letter is added to the 9 group.

How to calculate an Expression number from the chart

Write the complete birth name and place each letter value beneath it. Add every value, including repeated letters and middle names. Reduce the total by adding its digits until you reach 1-9, unless your chosen method preserves 11, 22 or 33.

  1. 01

    Write MAYA REED

    M = 4, A = 1, Y = 7, A = 1; R = 9, E = 5, E = 5, D = 4.

  2. 02

    Add the values

    4 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 5 + 4 = 36.

  3. 03

    Reduce the total

    3 + 6 = 9. The example Expression number is 9.

One alphabet chart, three different name numbers

ALL

Expression number

Add every letter in the complete birth name to explore abilities and how potential is expressed.

AEIOU

Soul Urge number

Add the vowels to explore inner motivation and emotional fulfilment.

REST

Personality number

Add the consonants to explore outward style and first impressions.

Is Y a vowel in name numerology?

Practices differ. A common approach treats Y as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound, as in Lynn, and as a consonant when it begins a syllable with a consonant sound, as in Yolanda. Automated calculators may instead classify Y consistently as a consonant. The important point is to state the convention and use it consistently.

Pythagorean and Chaldean alphabet charts are not interchangeable

A Chaldean chart assigns values according to a different sequence and traditionally uses numbers 1-8 for letters. It may therefore produce a different name number from the Pythagorean table above. Do not mix one system's letter values with another system's interpretation or reduction rules.

Which name belongs in the calculation?

For the six core numbers, use the full name recorded at birth. A married, professional or chosen name can be calculated separately to explore how a current identity is expressed, but it should be labelled as a current-name layer. Keeping both totals prevents a name change from erasing the original calculation.
